What I Did to our House in 2013

It's the last day of 2013!! This year marked some big changes for me and my family- one of the biggest being moving back to Florida from Minneapolis. We got here at the beginning of March, so the rest of the year I've been working to make the house we're renting feel like home. To think I've been blogging for just under 3 years now and this is the third house we've lived in during that time. I guess there's an upside to not being "settled"- all the different houses to blog about keeps this site from getting boring!

So anyways some of the major things I've done in this current house during 2013 are-

Built a dining room table: {Which I still owe a tutorial for I know!!}

....plus there were lots of little changes and diy projects that made this place look and feel a lot more like us. 2013 was a productive and fun year and I'm excited for everything I have planned for the upcoming year!

Happy New Year!!

Better Lighting for the New Year!

I hope everyone has had a really great holiday season!! It feels so good to be back to my blog; I've missed this place! I've been competing for crappiest blogger award all month, but now with the holiday craziness almost behind us I'm ready to get back to normal posting. I've got to admit it's been nice though to slow down for the month and just enjoy my family and Christmas and all the food and fun this month brings.

It's also brought a bunch of changes to our house that I've been itching to get done and that I'm now really excited to share! One change that hasn't happened quite yet but will be happening soon is that I'm hopeful that the lighting in our home is going to improve! With the changes I've made this month in our living room, dining room, and play room, (showing them all soon!) I'm really wanting to experience these rooms in their best light. Like, literally. Right now the over head lighting in a lot of our house is really blah- dim and super yellow. It doesn't light the rooms in a way that looks bright and flattering. But GE is going to help me change that with some new GE reveal lightbulbs.

And you can improve your home's lighting with just the change of a lightbulb too! I'll let the GE geniuses explain:

Fur in the Dining Room

 Maybe that sounds weird.
But it sure doesn't look it.

Oversized Floor Lamps

I hope everyone had a fabulous Christmas!! Full disclosure: I'm no where near my blog today. I'm likely sleeping, playing with my kids' new toys, or stuffing myself with fudge. I know that admitting a post was written in advance kind of takes the magic out of it or something, but likely a lot of my regular readers aren't here today either anyway. But for those of you who are I do have one quick thing for you-

This:

\

I have been taking serious note of this trend and I'm majorly wishing we had the space somewhere for a ginormous lamp. I am nuts about this look.

I'm showing more pictures and just doing some general gushing over at the blog for Chandelier Warehouse today so come by and check it out

DIY Felt Garland

I have been a super sucky blogger this month. At least my traffic stats indicate that everyone's too busy to care.
I've been trying to get a handle on the Christmas shopping- since I just started yesterday.
Yikes.
I do not recommend waiting until the very last second to do your shopping. There are a few gifts that I'll waiting by the door for on Christmas Eve, biting my nails and wringing my hands till they get delivered.

I did manage to get one cute Christmas DIY done a few days ago- a felt garland.

It was really easy to make-

I started by cutting out a bunch of different sized circles from white felt.

Then I just sewed them together to make a long chain.

It was a little bit tedious because every time I added a new circle to the chain I had to stop the sewing and raise the presser foot so that I could slide the next circle under it:

Even though it was a lot of starting and stopping, it actually wasn't bad. It was redundant but kind of relaxing since I didn't really have to think about what I was doing. I just kind of zoned out and sewed my circles. It was one of those things where I'd look up after a few minutes and realize I'd just done like 5 feet of chain.

I like that the circles are all different sizes too. They look like snow balls.

The garland looks pretty on the tree-

But my favorite spot for it is hung across the wall in the playroom.

And the best part is that paired with a tree or a wreath (like the pretty one in the playroom that my son made at school) this garland adds to the festive feel, but since it's not overly Christmasy on it's own, I can leave it up all year. Which I plan to do since it's making that big empty wall look so much better. I think I'll make some more felt garlands to hang with it. I just haven't decided if I want to keep them all white or do some other colors.

Well I'm off to try to finish up my Christmas shopping. Here's to never being a last minute shopper again. (Raising my cocoa to that.)

Oh before I go, my sponsor DecoraUSA is giving away $100 to their site, so go here to enter.

What I Want For Christmas

Here it is, my annual Christmas wish list! {Rob are you paying attention?
I don't know about you, but I'm a super greedy person. I have a constant, running list in my head at all times of things I want. That's not to say I'm not happy without them or that I feel like I'll die if I never end up owning them (in most cases)- if they never end up being mine I am perfectly okay and my life is great regardless. But I definitely take notice of things that I like.
I always tell Rob how easy he has it at Christmas and birthdays because he never has to agonize over what to get me. When I ask him what he wants he's like "I don't know........I'll get back to you."
Ask me and in 15 seconds I'll give you at least 10 things.

So here are some things on my list this year. Any one of these would rock my happy world.

I really need to get a grip on my jewelry organization (or lack there-of). These pretty boxes would motivate me to get my jewels in order.

I'd love to have this whole set because these plant photos are just so gorgeous. But they're on the pricey side so even just one would be beautiful on it's own.

I can think of about a billion things that would look pretty under this little glass dome.  And even empty, this would look so pretty in my kitchen.

This is so dang expensive for a candle sconce but I want two of them for over either side of our mantel. Our bank account might cry but so would I- tears of joy because they'd look just so pretty.

I think I'd be a better saver if I had this adorable little guy to hold my pennies.

Spoiler alert- it's already been determined that I'll be getting this for Christmas. Our dining room needs this.

I'd love to be reminded of this every day, so I want this print some where on our walls.

Adulting- Urban Outfitters

I'm turning 30 soon. So I figure it can't help to read this book.

It's not all about the house.

I need some art above the fireplace. So a couple of these would be perfect to put it in.

Earlier this year I curated a flash sale for Arcadian Home- so to commemorate that I'd love to get this silver wishbone that was part of my collection. And it'd be cute on my ottoman tray.

Add a gift card to The Container Store because I'm in a major mood to organize, and then that's about it! Any of these on your gift wish list?

btw, I'm over at the DecoraUSA Idea Corner talking about sitting areas in bedrooms (wish I could add one of those to my list- my bedroom is in a sad, sad state). Read my post here
